The drains are older than the people worrying about them.

Old Hall was built in the late 1970s and early 80s as one of Warrington New Town's planned neighbourhoods, laid out around Old Hall Lane in the loops and cul-de-sacs of the period. It caught the tail end of pitch-fibre and the beginning of plastic, which means two very different pipes can sit on the same run — sometimes on the same property. That junction is where we find most of the trouble: the pitch-fibre section deforms, the plastic section doesn't, and the connection between them opens up. Old Hall's other recurring find is the shared run. New Town estates were laid out with drainage serving several houses at once, and forty years later nobody living there knows where the boundary is.

Questions we get asked

How do I know whether my Old Hall drain is pitch-fibre?
The camera identifies it on sight — pitch-fibre has a distinctive dark, fibrous wall and it deforms into an oval rather than cracking. Houses built between roughly 1955 and 1978 are the candidates. If yours has it, the report says how far the deformation has gone and whether it can be reformed and lined rather than dug out.
Is the drain mine or United Utilities'?
Most drains serving a single property — up to the point where they join the public sewer — are your responsibility. The public sewer is United Utilities'. We identify the boundary during the survey so you know exactly where your liability ends.
How long does it take?
The survey itself is usually about an hour for a typical Old Hall semi or terrace. Allow 90 minutes for larger properties or multiple access points.
Do you dig anything up?

I'm buying a house — is it worth it?
